- Scarlet Lady cruise ship review: What to expect on board Virgin Voyages’ 1st ship

Everyone raves about the meatballs, the pappardelle pasta and the ricotta bomboloni (like Italian donut holes). Scarlet Lady is peppered with restaurants and bars, and it's possible you won't be able to try them all in one sailing. Do your research in advance because some venues are easy to miss if you're not looking for them.

Most of them are on Deck 15, with the above Deck 16 housing one "RockStar Suite Sailor" (bow-facing Owner Suite). All cabins have a double bed which can be divided into two, although friends traveling together should note; you'll be sleeping foot to foot in an L shape configuration, as opposed to having the beds pulled apart side by side. Pullman beds drop from the ceiling if you're looking to fit more people inside. Sea Terrace cabins have balconies that are square-shaped and include two chairs and a signature Virgin red hammock. At 105 square feet, the Inside cabin on the Scarlet Lady cruise ship is the smallest of all three types and a tad snug by industry standards. However, to create a feeling of more space, Virgin has tweaked the typical layout you might expect on a cruise ship.

The boat has 17 decks, of which 13 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins. But before you roll your eyes, it's not just about clever word play and simply renaming traditional cruise venues -- Virgin has genuinely tried to do something different. Although Virgin Voyages' ships allowed anyone 18 or older to sail, the drinking age on board is 21 years when ships are docked in the U.S.

The complex has 6 bars, outdoor lounge areas with hammock groves, beach loungers, watersport activities, (optional/at extra cost) private poolside and beach-side cabanas for rent. Dining on Virgin Voyages ships is ticket price-inclusive - no extra charges are applied to any of the 20-plus onboard dining options. The cruise company doesn't believe in "paying more for great food", so it ditched traditional surcharges levied in specialty restaurants. All eateries on Scarlet Lady offer "exceptional made-to-order eats" - complimentary. RockStar Suite passengers enjoy exclusive access to "Richard's Rooftop" (VIP club lounge located forward on Deck 16).
Virgin describes the experience as a mashup of an old-school variety show and a late-night talk show, with dinner, comedy and music. You'll want to make your dinner reservations as soon as you get on board. One thing that surprised me was the ship requests you also make reservations for breakfast, brunch or lunch at sit-down restaurants, such as The Wake and Razzle Dazzle.
You may want to bring some cash to tip the porters who take your suitcases from the pier to the ship and any tour guides who lead your ship-sponsored or private excursion in port. For the ship's transatlantic crossing and all subsequent cruises from Barcelona, you'll need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date you return back to the U.S. Right next door is the Lick Me Till Ice Cream outpost where you can choose from a changing roster of hand-scooped ice cream and cone flavors. Down the hall is The Social Club Diner satisfying all your bar food cravings with hot dogs (including vegan ones), chicken wings and soft pretzels. You can also order sweets like cake pops and steal candy out of a jar (except it's not stealing if it's free and meant for you to take).

Oddly, the restaurant had no jam for my British-style chocolate-chip scone and I had to make do with butter. Your server will bring the most popular of the appetizer, seafood, meat and dessert courses, though your table can turn down any option, ask for more of a favorite or request the alternatives (mostly vegetarian dishes). All the seafood (shrimp, octopus, etc.) is cooked together in the table's central grilling station, followed by the meat – without a thorough cleaning of the grill. If this bothers you due to allergies or dietary restrictions, make sure you inform the server. Twin beds can be arrayed in various configurations along the platform.
The Happenings Cast on Scarlet and Entertainment

Scarlet Lady is owned by the company VC SHIP ONE LTD and managed/chartered by VIRGIN VOYAGES LTD. Note too, that cabin numbers are the same either side of the ship, they are not odd or even -- the letter A is Port side, Z is starboard (this is a nod to airline configuration). There are no key cards; Virgin uses wearable tech that opens your door and pays your bills. We were blown away by the entertainment -- a show called Duel Reality, which is a riff on Romeo & Juliet/West Side Story, with some of the most amazing -- in fact, the most amazing -- acrobatics we have ever seen. All cabins are outfitted with North American, USB and universal (European, U.K. and many other countries) outlets.

I had two pushed together into a queen with one-third of the platform as a bedside table, but a triple could have a third bed jutting out perpendicular from the other two. Or, if you plan on hosting an event in your cabin, or don't like reading on a bed, you can ask your room attendant to strip the sheets and arrange two daybed mattresses into an L-shaped sectional couch. The IKEA-inspired furnishings and mod décor made the room resemble a trendy micro hotel. On the cabin's long wall, there was a cloth headboard and a narrow white platform with one thick armrest. Scarlet Lady is a ship for independent travelers who don't need their hands held or want to be told what to do by a cruise director (there isn't one).
Keeping with the music theme, each of the 78 suites boasts a record player. Tantalizing dining is offered on Scarlet Lady in upwards of 20 venues, all included, with a diverse range of options, from casual fare to haute cuisine. Choose from glamorous settings and al fresco venues, as well as its largest restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
When out and about, there are plenty of shopping opportunities, including the chance to get inked at the onboard tattoo parlor (the first of its kind on a cruise ship). In February 2020 Virgin announced "The Band" - smart wearable technology introduced on Scarlet Lady (April 1st). The device is made from recycled marine plastic (sustainability initiative) and developed via partnership with The Bionic Company. The lightweight device (RFID wristband) is mailed to all passengers and is complimentary (keepsake). Her appointment was announced in June 2019 by Sir Richard Branson. Captain Wendy Williams (from Sept-Iles Quebec) became the first Canadian woman appointed Master of a major cruise line vessel.
While this beautiful "Lady" is brimming with desirable amenities, there is very little one would consider traditional onboard Scarlet Lady. Immersive entertainment includes a festival-like lineup crafted by renowned artists, choreographers and directors. Participate in an interactive cabaret featuring the ship’s Resident Sexologist. Ethereal technology, stunning choreography and breathtaking acrobatics are incorporated into many productions.
One of the biggest nights on Virgin Voyages ships is Scarlet Night. This night is a ship-wide event and celebration that starts with sailors dressing in red and transforming the ship into an array of festivities. Speaking of food pushers, the ship’s crew we interacted with throughout the cruise couldn’t have been more helpful, happy, and going out of their way to ensure we had a great vacation. Everyone we encountered was nice and ready to assist, from the cabin attendants to the shore things staff. We loved that The Galley was not a buffet but more like a food court with the option of having servers take your orders. You could make lines, but with a flag raised for service at a table, they came quickly to take your order.
Bimini’s diverse and satisfying culinary offerings were a pleasant surprise, boasting shorter wait times compared to other cruise lines’ private island options. The ship was thoughtfully designed with an abundance of charging ports, ensuring convenience at every turn, be it at the buffet, in the room, or elsewhere. A unique feature was the hammock on the balcony, adding a charming touch to the accommodations. While not a necessity, it certainly added to the overall enjoyment. But you'll pay a lot more in "extras" if sailing on Freedom of the Seas, where specialty restaurants, gratuities and Wi-Fi are not included in the fare.
Wrapping panoramic views from the corner of the ship are emphasized by design choices in this suite. Enjoy custom interior wicker chairs in this, the highest and biggest of the Cheeky Corner terraces, meant to maximize sea views - in this case, the wake view. Sailors will gaze at the sea while relaxing near the gorgeous outdoor Champagne table or kicking back in the hand-woven hammock chair.
